Look, ask anyone who knows me, I am a true capitalist at heart. I love seeing the player cash in on their performance, but what is with these teams making some guys the highest paid EVER at their position?
Don't get me wrong. Steve Hutchinson is an awesome guard. He really is an elite performer and he deserves to be the highest paid at the position in the NFL right now. Still, it has got to make you wonder wat is in the water in Minnesota for them to want to pay him like an elite Left Tackle. Guard is an important position, but it is not as valuable as tackle or center, and to pay the man that much money, to me is simply crazy.
Still, I've got to hand it to Steve. He showed how smart he is by taking the money and working with his agent to make sure he and his family will be well taken care of. Steve, great job man.
Now the one that really blows my mind was the move by the Washington Redskins making Adam Archuleta the highest paid safety in league history.
Of course Archuleta is smiling... he just robbed Dan Snyder. (AP Photo / Gerald Herbert)
Seriously, Dan Snyder is nuts. I know the guy wants to win, but he spends as if his life depended on it. Guys like Ed Reed and Troy Polomalu have to be licking their lips waiting for their current deals to expire. If they use Archuleta's contract as the bench mark for their deals, they will each make what... a Goojillian Dollars.
If we were to compare Archuleta to say, Ed Reed, it become even more boneheaded a decision by Snyder. Archuletta has played in the league for five seasons. Over that time he has averaged 79 tackles per year and has collected a grand total of 3 interceptions. Now lets look at Reed. He has played in the league for 4 years, and he is averaging bettert han 66 tackles in each of those years, less than a 1 tackle per game difference, but he has complied 22 total interceptions. That's right, Ed Reed averages more interceptions each year than Adam Archuleta has collected in his entire 5 year career !!!
The Steeler's Troy Polomalu also is a better safety than Archuleta. Remember Adam's numbers 79 tackles per year and 3 total picks. Now for Polomalu's numbers... 70 tackles per year and 7 career interceptions, in two fewer seasons !!!
America, it is time for you to sound off. Tell me what you think of Daniel Snyder making Adam Archuleta the highest paid saftey in NFL history.
